Halifax Earth Technologies continued to specialize in the management and removal of invasive plants as well as future-oriented ecosystem design.

This year the team finished a goutweed job by dismantling, sifting and rewalling this dry stone raised bed.

While the Ecology Action Centre rebuilt their deck, the central raised bed was restabilized with a dry stacked brick retaining wall.

This homeowner bought a large suburban partly forested plot, and wanted to reclaim some lawn for the forest. We sheet-mulched about a half acre and planted walnut, hazelnut, tamarack, dogwood, Highbush cranberry, Sugar maple, Sumac, and native flowers for pollinator support.

Problem goutweed, knotweed and chamelion plant were first-pass removed.

Three sets of two images each show the before and after of converting lawn to woodland by planting trees, and killing grass by first covering with cardboard and then bark mulch.

I did a delightful permaculture design for a site in Yarmouth. This special site contained lakefront property that could be gardened with permission from the local wildlife conservation association. Land would be set aside for a second home, space for food forestry was found, and land under cultivation can be optimized, with a special focus on herbal coffees.

A management plan was drafted for an acre of pasture to be brought back into production using a controlled burn.

The property showcases a view of the lake which makes it attractive for a secondary Air BNB, camping, or rental property. This view was to be preserved and not blocked by planting trees.
The west plan of the property includes the pasture and hedge options to surround the pasture, pollinator meadow, zone 1 raised bed and chicken system, and areas for dogs to run.
A plan of the east end of the property includes hedge plants, food forest arrangements, and special edible planting for areas saturated with fresh water.
A watercolour painting dictates lake side plantings as follows:
Moist ground: asparagus, joe pye weed, boneset, Canada Holly, Rhexia, Geum, Black elder, New Jersey Tea, Skirret, Labrador tea.
Water's edge land: cranberry, cattails, watercress, cloudberry
Water's edge lakeside: Vervein, Acorus calamus, blue flag, marsh marigold
Sunlit Lake bottom: Nuphar waterlily, Saggitaria arrowhead
Shaded lake bottom: wild rice
